From worse to worst: Derby's are for weekends

NAME:  MTN8 Tournament
DISCRIPTION: Soccer
DURATION: Annual event
LOCATION: Soccer City, Diepklof, Soweto

It’s that time of the year again when PSL teams combat for the 8 million rand MTN8 Wafa Wafa cup. The MTN8 tournament features the top 8 previous league teams including our very own and most loved arch rival teams of Soweto Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Everywhere you go, everywhere you turn the soccer fanatics are going cracked, but who would blame them, Soweto derby are always entertaining.

To be honest, I am not really a soccer fan, I never really follow the league, and I just become exultant when they tell me that Kaizer Chiefs is at the top or has won a game or something. In my entire life I had never been to the stadium until last year during the Carling Black Label Cup which was held at Soccer City and from that day onwards I have note looked back.

I am telling you, the rave that was going on in the stadium was amazing, the people, the vuvuzela, the drums, the singing and chanting, wow, it was out of this world. Well now, that anticipation has yet came upon the fans, the first leg (I don’t know why they call it leg but they just do) was initially scheduled to be on the 21st August will now be played on the 24th August and the second leg on the 24th September 2013 but that was changed because of the heart-rending event that took place in 2001 at Elise Park Stadium where 43 people lost their lives. A very sad it was that made other radicals like my uncle sore never to lay their feet at any stadium again. But would you blame them?
We are Khosified: Me and my buddy Tsolo
ON A DAAYZIE NOTE: Once bitten twice shy_ while I think putting up Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is just another money spinner, changing the dates was just not a good call because they are not solving any issues, fact is, the 24th it is still going to be during the week regardless of the holiday. Ever seen how emotional soccer fan become when their team loses, to me it’s just a match and one team should win but to some people it’s like they have lost some part of their identity or they have bet their money on this (well some do). But nje, having the derby on a week day is not on.

  1. The way I have been looking forward to this blog lol, I am glad its here

I am also not a soccer fanatic but I am a proud Bucs, I also dont think it is a good idea to have the match during the week, I really dont want to see history repeating itself

    ReplyDelete
  2. But Daisy, its a public holiday, I think thats why they came to that conclusion dont you think?

    ReplyDelete
  3. @ Iris, the long wait is finally here :)

exactly my point, like this is the biggest game in Soweto and people go out in number to go watch that match, what is even worse is that some people are waking up the next day to go to work, school etc, most of them dont really like attending event during the week, so i just think its a bad idea

    ReplyDelete
  4. @ Rose, public holidays are for chilling lol, do you know the thought for waking up after a long day which was meant for chilling, well that is just besides the point, the 2001 saga is what they are trying to run away from, but how are they doing that if the match is still during the week?

  5. Aka Mamello Mokoena

Hi Daz, in my opinion I dont mind the Derby during the week, it sets us up there with international hosting of big matches whenever and wherever, people just need to get rid of dogma and comfort. This is a chalenge to enhance and find out if there are really staunch supports (not just fans) that will beat any weather or night yto suport their teams. I dont really want to use overseas countries and their games as an example but for them as long as there is a game they go, they dont wait fr their day off or holiday to be entertained, even ifits a working day they will dig into their pockets and go.

  6. Some people do not even eat food when their favorite soccer teams lost, the reason of this is that soccer fans bet thousands of money predicting which soccer team is going to win. So when their favorite teams lose, they only think of the thousand rand they bet with.

  7. From JAY's point of view as soccer fanatic and one of the loudies at the soccer arenas, i think its all about cheering "your boys". am a proud Mamelodi Sundowns supporter but i dont see anything wrong with going to the stadium to watch the soweto clowns play to their usual draw. My point is soccer is a beautiful game and since these two clowns from soweto attract a large crowd, then it should be on the safer days that the horrible incident i saw on 11 april 2001 at the ellispark stadium.

  8. There is no such thing as just "a match". People take soccer seriously, you'd swear it was life and death if they were to miss the game. Unless we're hardcore soccer fans like others, we'll never understand where they are coming from.

  9. @Mamello, I get your point and sort of agree with it, its soccer and it is entertaining, most def should go there when we feel like it but this is SA (Soweto)that we are talking about, international people dont go around vandalising stadiums and throwing things around just because their teams have lost,NO, they dont. To top it all a match between Pirates and Chiefs really turn people heads around,I just feel to avoid historical events that we are known for, just keep the Derbies for weekend "once beaten twice shy"

@Era lol, those are fanatics for you, do you see how emotional people get when it comes to a Derby match, since SA is still a developing country, Sowetans also need to develop a way to handle defeat

@Johannes, haaaah Mr Sundowns, why are you calling us clowns nou, I feel offended (joking). My point exactly, Soweto derby attract a lot of (irrational) fans and honesty I dont want to see history repeating itself

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Keabetswe, exactly, they are die hard fans out there, and they take this very seriously, to be honest, we dont know where their emotions might lead them

    ReplyDelete
  11. you might as well call me a hater when it comes to socccer but im a proud khosi fan but maybe some day i might watch the derby i would really love to see pirates get beaten up by chiefs...lol

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Vuyo, ever been to the stadium girl, iyoo you dont know what you are missing, but let me not say that because about a year ago I was just like you, but after watching one match, I never looked back

You should join me @ orlando stadium on the 24 September, I swear you wont regret it.

  13. Interesting view of things Daisy, oh well I think to us South Africa’s soccer or should I say the Soweto derby is like our tradition and we just go to these things for the love of our traditions even though sometimes it can be very annoying with all the noise of vuvuzelas and staff

    1. so true Nyiko, soccer sa a whole nje is a culture to some of us, hence we take it so personal just like the way Daz pointed it out

  14. soccer is life and that statement will resonate with many soccer fans but for us in SA if there was ever a game to watch its the derby and the saftey of the supported should be protected not a bad move i think

    1. but my point is, the 24 still fall on a weekday so how did they solve anything there?
weekends have worked at their advantage why change when something is working?

  15. all i am saying is that the reason behind management and authorities try and will try to avoid games on weekends is beause o our unruley behaviour at times, not that they dont expec supporters to attach any emaotions to the game,we south africans need to respect our teams and stay true to the definition of a supporter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. LOL but I agree, thats why i said as a developing country we need to develop respect and how to deal with defeat

  16. am not a soccer lover but i agree with you, the atmosphere at the stadium will make you fall inlove with soccer. Believe me people will go during the week, day or night, rain or not

  17. survival of the fittest here, yes Chiefs managed to clinch that beer cup lately, but that does not guarantee anything at all, this is MTN 8, and 8 million rand at stake, the winner takes all, its gonna be one remarkable battle.

    1. lol, game on!! but chiefs and pirates are not the only teams which are battling for the 8 million, we might not even make it

  18. Not a soccer fan but i wouldn't mind watching the game on weekends because i feel like there's so much vibe than watching it during the week.

    ReplyDelete

    1. yes, the vibe is spectecular compared to weekdays, the thought of not having to wake up to work or school make all the fun, on that note however you must go to a match sometime, its cheap cheap, R50 a tickets

  21. I think the changing of dates is good. We are talking about a Soweto derby here not about mediocre sides from Mvela. RISE KHOSI RISE!!!

    1. i just dont like the reason behind them changing the dates, they should have sticked to the original date and stop opening old wounds nje

      RISE!!!

  22. well im one of those people who get all emotional and grumpy when my team loses...im a huge pirates fan and i watch their matches at the stadium whether its a derby or not...bt i must say it was really heartbreaking losing to chiefs for the black label cup-i literally cried lol i like it for the pirates hehe

    ReplyDelete
  23. lol, vele, pirates fans are very emotional iyoo, i was sitting next to some pirates fan @the carling black lable cup, he was so angry i didnt even want to get on his bad books lol....you must learn how to handle defeat and stop crying lol

  24. Be it a holiday or what, I just think by scheduling the match on that day kills the significance of the day. Knowing South Africans and how much a majority love their soccer that day will plainly be just about the derby and not Heritage day/ National braai day. Promoting Heritage Day and its importance will be of difficulties for any PR practitioner

    ReplyDelete

    1. hao Mpule, but soccer is part of our heritage though, for me soccer is one of the games that make us come together as a nation.

I think that one can still embrace their heritage where ever they are dont you think?

  28. A derby is best suitable on a weekend, when most people are free to go watch the game at the stadium or at home.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes I totally agree, imagine the thought of having to wake up the next day to do to work or school, not a pretty site

      Delete
  29. I can imagine how different it would be during the week because the atmosphere and vibe are not the same as during the weekend.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. the atmosphere I am not too worried about it because its the Soweto derby and people go there in numbers regardless of the day

I just dont think changing the dates made any different prior to their reasons

  31. I don’ know how to put this, because as a person who also grew up not being a fan of soccer, I used to love and always enjoyed playing a game of soccer with my friend at Nellmapius (Pretoria). I have never been to a stadium to watch a soccer game before, but I have to mention that it looks fun. So, are you planning on making another trip to the stadium to catch another derby?
